CHISHOLM CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Letter Library

Chisholm Catholic College Library > Chisholm Catholic College

Our story begins with a Year 8 student who fell in love with an amazing book. This book was called Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley.

In Words in Deep Blue, the Letter Library is housed up the back of a second-hand bookshop called Howling Books. It is a set of shelves where the bookshop keeps copies of books that people love. Customers are allowed to write in the books. They can underline words and highlight their favourite lines. They can leave notes in the margins; leave thoughts about the meaning of things discovered in the book. It is called a Letter Library because a lot of people write more than a note in the margin – they write whole letters and put them between the pages of books. And strangers, who love the same books that they do, write back.

Inspired by Cath Crowley’s incredible novel, the student approached Library staff and asked if we could create our very own Letter Library at Chisholm Catholic College for book lovers to spread some book love. This dream has finally come to fruition with the launch of our very own Letter Library.

Term 4 2020- What a year!

Chisholm Catholic College Library > Chisholm Catholic College

Term for has been one for recognising and celebrating our readers.

Earlier this term we celebrated our incredibly dynamic and engaging Year 12 Leader Readers. Over the past three years these students have promoted and run numerous library events to promote and support a love of reading throughout our College. Jasmine, Angela, Trinity, Natasha, and Daniel (with Luke Turner- absent) have been exceptional role models for their peers. They will be greatly missed by the library staff but have left their mark on the Chisholm Library for future Leader Readers to fill their awesome shoes.

Students who participated in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2020 have also been recognised and celebrated this term. Over the course of Terms 2 and 3, a group of keen readers read numerous books for enjoyment whilst keeping up with their schoolwork. It is wonderful to see a passion for reading alive and well among our students.

On Friday 23 October, our Year 7 Kids Lit Quiz Team competed in the National Finals. Our Year 7 Team of Rohan Barraclough, Isabella Harland-Smith, Yasmine Nijjar and Noah Teunis put their literature knowledge to the test against twelve other schools from across the country. Overall, our team came 7th. This is an amazing achievement for our students and the best result Chisholm College has ever achieved!

On Friday 24th July, Chisholm’s Year 7 and 8 teams took on 11 other schools across Brisbane and the Gold Coast to answer a range of literature question across eight categories. Our Year 7 team of Rohan Barraclough, Isabella Harland-Smith, Yasmine Nijjar and Noah Tenuis WON the competition and will be competing for the National Title in early Term 4. Our Year 8 team of Ella Marshall, Olivia Fitzgerald, Jake, and Alice clawed their way from 7th place in one instance to finish 3rd overall (only 2 points from taking 2nd place). It is wonderful to see our students engaged with literature and reading widely.
