CHISHOLM CATHOLIC COLLEGE

National Championships, here we come

Chisholm Catholic College Library > reading competitions

Chisholm would like to congratulate our Year 7 and 8 Kids Lit Quiz Teams on their outstanding results. The Kids Lit Quiz is an international competition held in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and the USA. The winning team from each heat competes in a National Final. National champions compete in the World Final.

On Friday 24th July, Chisholm’s Year 7 and 8 teams took on 11 other schools across Brisbane and the Gold Coast to answer a range of literature question across eight categories. Our Year 7 team of Rohan Barraclough, Isabella Harland-Smith, Yasmine Nijjar and Noah Tenuis WON the competition and will be competing for the National Title in early Term 4. Our Year 8 team of Ella Marshall, Olivia Fitzgerald, Jake, and Alice clawed their way from 7th place in one instance to finish 3rd overall (only 2 points from taking 2nd place). It is wonderful to see our students engaged with literature and reading widely.

2019 Brisbane South Regional Readers’ Cup

Chisholm Catholic College Library > reading competitions

On Tuesday 4th June, three amazing students represented Chisholm at the Brisbane South Regional Readers’ Cup Competition. Readers’ Cup is a State-wide competition organised by the QLD Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Teams of 3-4 students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books. Chisholm were represented by Kevaan Sandanayake (year 7), Ella Marshall (year 7) and Alisha Hill (year 8). Our incredible students competed against 19 other teams (of four students) from schools such as Somerville House and The Anglican Church Grammar School. Our students placed a well-deserved 4th place, our best result yet. The Chisholm Comm unity are extremely proud of their efforts. Well done Kevaan, Ella and Alisha.

A Busy and Exciting Term 1

Chisholm Catholic College Library > reading competitions

Term 1 has been a busy hive of activity for the Library. Throughout the term students have had opportunities to be involved in many reading extra-curricular activities.

On the 20th March, 8 students in Years 7 and 8 represented our College at the Kids Lit Quiz Brisbane Heat Competition. This is a competition which involves students answering 100 questions from 10  different categories. Both our Year 7 and 8 Teams topped a category round, finishing in the top 10 (out of 25 schools). The students had a great day and represented our College with pride.

On the 21st March, it was time for Students in Years 10-11 to get out and about, attending the Somerset Storyfest. This is an annual festival held at Somerset College, celebrating literature and Australian authors. 16 students attended the day listening to inspiring authors and poets from Scott Wings, Cath Crowely and Jane Caro. It was a fabulous day, with students taking away many thoughtful insights:

“When writing a story, don’t tell the reader what’s happening, show what is happening.”- Ruby

“Poetry slams can tell a meaningful story.”- Keely

“Books are more than simply words on a page.”- Sienna

“From books, you can learn so much more than just what it’s about.”- Jasmine

“People who don’t read, only live one life. People who do, live a thousand.”- Jorja

“The right sentence can change someone’s life forever.”- Natasha

To finish off a fun-filled term, Year 7 and 8 Students participated in our College Readers’ Cup competition. 10 teams of 4 competed against each other to be the team to represent Chisholm at the Brisbane Readers’ Cup Heats. It was a fun afternoon where students answered questions from the 4 books they had been reading over the Term. The final result:

Equal 3rd- The Grangers and The Bookworms

2nd place- The Epic Gamers

1st place- Da Book Boyz and Da Book Lady.

Congratulations to our winning teams, and all of our participants.
